We all have home town traditions. As a native New Orleanian living in North Dallas, the traditional wedding in New Orleans has nuances that are not traditional anywhere else. One of those traditions is the Wedding Cake tradition.
Before the wedding cake is officially cut by the bride and groom at the reception, those bridesmaids who are single, along with other selected single ladies at the reception, each select the end of a silk ribbon that protrudes from the base of the wedding cake. Baked into the cake are 10 small charms that are attached to the other end of the ribbon.
At a designated time, the single ladies are given the signal to pull the silk ribbon to see what their fate will be, which is determined by the charm on the other end of the ribbon.
Each charm meaning is as follows:
- Anchor-Love that is steady and true
- Clover-Good Luck in life
- Fleur di Lis -Flowery
- Button-Bachelor
- Horse Shoe- Good News
- Heart-True and enduring love
- Silver Dime-Wealth
- Thimble-Old Maid
- Wishbone-Success
- Wedding Ring-Matrimony
